According to South AV xxx Korea, North Korea appears to be using drones to spy on a US missile defense system stationed in the country.
A drone, presumably from North Korea, had taken ten recordings of the THAAD defense shield, according to the South Korean military on Tuesday. The aircraft equipped with a camera had been found last week in a bordering forest.
Just last week, a reconnaissance droid had been found in a mountainous region in the north-east of South Korea. A military prosecutor announced a move against the use of the drones. According to the UN, North Korea has about 300 unmanned aerial vehicles. This included both battle and reconnaissance drones.
In the face of the growing threat from North Korea, South Korea and the US agreed last year on the deployment of the American high-altitude defense system (THAAD) about 250 kilometers from the North Korean border. The system should be operational by the end of this year.
In China, the plan met with sharp criticism because the THAAD radar system also extends far into the People's Republic. The weapon system is designed to deflect short and medium range missiles and destroy them outside the Earth's atmosphere. Despite ever-new UN sanctions and growing tensions with the West, North Korea has been testing rockets several times.
